Frequently Asked Questions

Washington DC FAQ

  • How will we get around?

We will be flying to Washington DC, using the Metro in Washington DC, and taking the train to Philadelphia.

  • Will students have a guided experience at the museums and landmarks or will they explore on their own in groups?

Some of both. At some locations, students will be able to do some independent exploring in groups. At other locations, we have exciting guided experiences planned. And at some locations, we will do a combination of both!

  • Will the first and last days mostly be travel days?

Yes. They will mostly be travel, but we may also plan some short activities depending on flight times.

  • Will the group all be on the same flight from Utah?

Yes, the group will all be on the same flight from Utah.

  • How many students and adults can go on the trip?

We can take up to 20 people for sure. If the trip fills quickly, we may take up to 30. There will be a majority of students, but any student can take 1 parent if desired. We will also have 2-3 IEProgram teachers on the trip.

  • What kinds of safety measures will be in place at the hotel and during evenings/free time to keep everyone supervised and safe?

We’ll be staying at an Airbnb, so that helps with keeping track of everyone! Each adult on the trip will be assigned a small group of specific students that they are responsible to keep track of for the duration of the trip. Students will be asked to share their location (if they have a device capable of location sharing) so that nobody wanders off and gets lost or left behind. Every adult on the trip is required to provide a clean, current background check. And we will have a list of house rules that will be enforced, including things like no boys in girls’ bedrooms/girls in boys’ bedrooms, no phones or other devices in bedrooms unless medically necessary, no leaving the Airbnb without adult supervision, a strict lights-out policy, etc. More details on this will be shared as we get closer, but if there are any specific concerns, parents should feel free to reach out. This is meant to be a positive, uplifting, and educational experience, so we want to do everything possible to keep it that way.

  • Will there be any down time for the kids to explore a little, or is everything pretty structured?

Everything will be pretty structured for the most part. There will be some flexibility for students to explore places like the memorials or Arlington more independently, and we’re planning a couple of fun relaxing activities too! But for the most part, for safety reasons and because this is an educational trip, it will be pretty planned-out and structured.

  • When are payments for the trip due?

At registration for trip – $100 non refundable deposit

    January 15, 2026 – $500 due

    February 1, 2026 – $500 due

March 15, 2026 – $400 due (may be adjusted based on plane tickets)

  • How old does my student have to be?

Minimum age is 14 by June 1.

  • Who will be leading the Washington DC trip?

The trip will be led by Mary Stoddard. Other adults on the trip may be asked to help with various activities.

  • What are the sleeping arrangements?

We will be renting an Airbnb. Youth will sleep in rooms with either other youth of the same gender and similar age, or with a parent. Parents will sleep in rooms with either another parent of the same gender or their child(ren).

No girls allowed in boys’ rooms and no boys in girls’ rooms. No phones will be allowed in bedrooms unless medically necessary.

  • What if my student has dietary restrictions?

For meals eaten at the Airbnb, we will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions. We will be mostly eating at places that can accommodate a pretty good range of dietary restrictions when we eat out as well. If you have specific concerns, please include it on the registration form and we’ll work with you to figure it out.

  • Are cell phones allowed?

Yes, but use of cell phones will be discouraged even while at the home so we can be present with each other.

  • How much does it cost?

About $1,500 per student ($875 trip fee, plus the cost of plane tickets)

  • What is included in the price?

Includes food, lodging, transportation including plane tickets, a t-shirt, and all of the amazing activities we will be doing for the duration of the trip. Souvenirs are not included.

  • Who is allowed to go?

Priority will be given to registered IEProgram Constitution students. If there is still space, other IEProgram students will be offered a spot in the order they got on the waitlist.

  • Can my child travel separately to Washington DC?

No. Everyone going on this trip will travel to Washington DC together, and we will take care of booking the flights. Arrangements can be made if you would like to stay longer. Please ask about that if interested.

  • When does registration open?

    December 8, 2025

  • Is the deposit refundable?

    No

  • Can my family join the group separately?
